Necker Cube Mock Up Initial mock up of the impossible Necker cube stand that I would like to build. Researching into this, I learned that this impossible illusion only works when the stand is looked at through a certain angle made with cuts in areas for the shape to connect. Problems and Solutions

Most Difficult Challenge for the FMP For the FMP project, the challenging aspect in my opinion will be the deliverables which I am thinking about working on Shadow sculpting, inspired by Noble and Webster’s photography work. The difficult parts will be first collecting objects, which convey one half of the piece; therefore the objects themselves need to have a significant meaning. Moreover I have to think about what imagery I want to portray using shadows, which must also be significant and work in contrast to the objects below. Aside from that, the other challenge will be to have a varied amount of experimental work, documented in my sketchbook which all must connect to my narrative of Perception in some way. To solve this, first I need to continue researching and then practicing various experimental work to do with our perception, such as creating illusions and portraying an art work with double meaning. Optical Illusion Experiments

Experiment 1 - Ovals   Just a simple optical illusion design I created in photoshop using ovals and the warp transform tool. I've noticed certain colours like grey does not work with this illusion whereas vibrant colours like blue and yellow do. This has taught me that not only imagery, but colours also play a large role in Optical illusions and our perception.  I followed a YouTube tutorial to create this illusion which you can watch and follow down below to create your own first simple illusion and experiment with colours. (WARNING! The tutorial voice sounds like one of those tedious monotone instructional videos.)   Experiment 2 - Ventricular Illusion Mount This experiment was created using cardboard cuts which I folded to form into triangles similar to the large Toblerone packaging which I then glued onto a A3 foam-board to create ventricular shapes. Bridget Riley

Bridget R iley is arguably the pioneer of optical art and illusions.As you can see, her art is mainly using the colours black and white and work with geometrical shapes such as triangles, squares and ovals. Further on she did begin to experiment with colour also but I'm much more interested in the pieces she did with black and white. For me, her work is beyond creative for her time, it's dynamic and illusive yet amazing but confusing. She's one of the reason I've looked into optical illusions as my main concepts and also our perception. Moreover I love how she combines her artwork with photography to create some amazing portraits which I would like to experiment myself and create illusive photographs. Furthermore I can gain inspiration from her artwork and emulate them, mixing colour into my works to give a more unique take on her art style. Op Art

The Op Art movement started roughly around 1964 and mainly pioneered by artist, Bridget Riley. The word Op is short for Optical and the art created to go along with this is usually in a geeometrical form which I've realised is common with optical illusions, because many shapes placed in a certain order can create something bizzare to the eye. Many Op artists do create their work with focus on illusions and perceptions which is easily noticeable if we look at common optical illusions today, the link between the two arts is very strong and similar. I plan on experimenting and creating my own Op art based on artists such as Bridget Riley and Frank Stella to name a few. Initial Perception Poster Design

What Are You Looking At? Here is the initial poster for my FMP concept on perception. The main focus when I was creating this poster is to make it difficult to stare at for too long which I think has worked pretty successfully (See if you can stare at it for more than ten seconds without your vision getting blurred). Furthermore this is disorientating our perception and is in some way an illusion to our eyes.

Scanimation

Kinegrams , which are now popularly reffered to as Scanimations are a special form of animation containing six frames. I came across this technique as I was researching into different forms of illusions. It creates not only the illusion of movement but a whole animation which appears to make the image move. In other words, it's using papers specially designed to create an animation instead of it being shown digitally which I think is not only amazing but exciting to watch more so than a digital animation. This works by placing and alligning an acetate overlay which is usually black and containing vertical stripes over a specially prepared image and moving the acetate paper from right to left. The most beautiful thing about these Scanimations are the mesmerising animated illusions and how complicated it can look before the black acetate is placed over the image to create the illusion. FMP - Perception For my initial FMP concept, I have begun to explore the theme of Perception. The way we perceive things differ as individuals, moreover it's also subjective to what we are percieving which controls our opinions, thoughts and emotions. Emotions and feelings in particular are what I want the final outcomes of my deliverables to bring out in people, whether they're positive or negative, a variety or similar, as long as people feel a strong emotion and feeling for the work, is my aim. Initially, I had thought about the idea of Media Control and just how much they control someone's opinion on the world, how much the Media can manipulate and fabricate news for their own ideals and agendas but which in turn relates to we as the people who perceive the world due to the media or in contrast, completely distrust the mainstream media.
